If two players have the same hand, the hand with the higher ranking cards will win.
Bets are placed after the cards are dealt face down. The player next to the dealer will be the small blind, which means he places half the minimum amount in order to see his cards. The player that sits next to him is the big blind, and he places an amount that is at least the minimum bet required to start the game.
The other players need to place the minimum amount required to start the game. Once all the players placed their bets, the cards may be viewed. This is the pre flop round and players may keep betting before all the cards are revealed in order to force a higher pot or push players out of the game.
There is a common practice of burning the first card on the deck before handing out cards (placing it out of play). This makes the game harder to anticipate.
Every time the dealer reveals a new set of cards or a single card, as in- flop, turn and river (3 cards, 4th card and then the 5th card), a round of bets begins. Betting happens in a circle. Once the cards are seen, the small blind needs to decide whether to remain in the game or fold. If he stays, he needs to complete his bet to match the minimum amount required for the game.
Players may now bet or raise if they feel like. As an alternative, they may check and move on to the next player, without placing a bet.
If a player raises, the next player has to either call his bet, that is- match his bet, raise, that is- bet an ever higher amount or fold, that is- return the cards to the dealer and leave the round.
Players may usually gauge their situation by looking at the flop, that is- the reveal of the first three cards by the dealer. These are the community cards that every player can use to build their hand. Compare these cards and the cards in your hand, then place a bet, call a bet, or fold.
The turn and river will reveal two more cards respectively, to create a set of five cards on the table. Analyze your position and decide whether to continue the round or fold. If all the players checked, it will be worth your while to check as well in order to stay in the game and see the next card.
The showdown is the round’s money time. After each player raises, calls or folds, the remaining players will participate in the showdown. Starting from the dealer’s left side, each player will reveal is cards and the winning hand will be announced. In case of a tie, the pot is split. If you folded, you don’t need to show your cards.
The game may often have fixed limits, that prevent players from betting over a certain amount. This ensures players can enjoy the game at amounts they are comfortable with.
